Hydromechanical considerations on the evolution and diversification of the echinoderm bauplans

چکیده

The pentaradial organisation of echinoderms is postulated to have evolved as the result of the reorganisation of the internal U-shaped mesentery of the intestinal tract during inflation of the trunk of a pterobranchlike ancestor. Under this scenario, loops of the mesentery developed between five hydraulic bulges by three different mechanisms: (1) by the early formation of two additional loops resulting directly in five hydraulic bulges, (2) by the subsequent formation of two additional loops resulting in the formation of initially three and then five hydraulic bulges or (3) by the inflation of the body without formation of loops. Accordingly there are at least three main evolutionary pathways within the echinoderms. The anatomical structures, such as the ambulacral system or the skeletal capsule, which characterize the echinoderms, developed independently in both lineages. From all the three pathways various body structures can be derived matching those found in fossil and extant echinoderms. The eleutherozoans and the earliest pentaradial echinoderms most likely evolved from the direct-pentaradial pathway whereas triradiate echinoderms and those which show a pentaradial organisation superimposed on triradial symmetry, likely evolved along the indirect pathway. The asymmetric or bilateral symmetric echinoderms evolved from the third paythway. The most important morphological transformations leading to the directly and indirectly pentaradial echinoderms are discussed

Evolution of unusual morphologies in Lentibulariaceae (bladderworts and allies) and Podostemaceae (river-weeds): a pictorial report at the interface of developmental biology and morphological diversification

BACKGROUND Various groups of flowering plants reveal profound ('saltational') changes of their bauplans (architectural rules) as compared with related taxa. These plants are known as morphological misfits that appear as rather large morphological deviations from the norm. Some of them emerged as morphological key innovations (perhaps 'hopeful monsters') that gave rise to new evolutionary lines ...

Hydromechanical considerations on the origin of the pentaradial body structure of echinoderms

When echinoderms are conceptualized as hydraulic entities, the early evolution of this group can be presented in a scenario which describes how a bilateral ancestor (an enteropneust-like organism) gradually evolved into a pentaradial echinoderm. According to this scenario, the arms are outgrowths from the anterior/ posterior body axis of the bilateral pterobranchia-like intermediate. These outg...

Corporate diversification and efficiency of manufacturing firms listed in Bursa Malaysia

There is little consensus on the corporate diversification-efficiency relationship in the diversification literature. The study aims to contribute to the literature by looking jointly at two dimensions of corporate diversification as product diversification and international diversification and the relationship between them. The results show negative relationship between product diversification...

An Investigation on the Effects of Optimum Forming Parameters in Hydromechanical Deep Drawing Process Using the Genetic Algorithm

The present research work is concerned with the effects of optimum process variables in elevated temperature hydro-mechanical deep drawing of 5052 aluminum alloy. Punch-workpiece and die-workpiece friction coefficients together with the initial gap between the blank holder and matrix were considered as the process variables which, in optimization terminology, are called design parameters. Since...

Dating divergence of Polystigma and other Sordariomycetes

Studies on the evolutionary history of ascomycetes in terms of time scale will help to understand historical patterns that shape their biodiversity. Until now most of dating studies of ascomycetes have focused on major events in fungal evolution but not on divergence events within smaller groups of fungi e.g. within Sordariomycetes. We used molecular dating to estimate the time of separation of...
